Dr Anushika Samarage
Specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist providing Public and Private reproductive care
My name is Dr Anushika Samarage, and I am an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist providing public and private care at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg,Victoria.
I am very passionate about Women’s health and strive on providing evidence-based patient-centred care to women of all ages. I love what I do! I enjoy caring for women during different stages of their life and guiding families through pregnancy and birth while they navigate their way into parenthood. I feel very enthusiastic at the prospect of being able to make a difference to women and their families in such a memorable moment in their lives.
My passion for medicine started back in my home country in Sri Lanka while I watched my father care for his patients in rural Sri Lanka. My love for Women’s health started as a medical student through Monash University. I was lucky to experience Obstetrics & Gynaecology as a medical student in Malaysia allowing me great insight into global health issues, different resources and allowed me to recognise limitations of medicine in different parts of the world.
I did most of my Obstetrics & Gynaecology training in Tasmania before moving to Melbourne in 2022 to work at the Mercy Hospital for Women. It has been a privilege to work at the Mercy Hospital for Women which is a tertiary hospital which has given me invaluable experience in managing high risk pregnancies including twins,
pregnancy ultrasound and wide-ranging experience in Gynaecology Surgery including minimally invasive keyhole surgery. I have also been involved in the team representing the Mercy Hospital for Women in the National Preterm Birth Prevention Collaborative where we managed to lower the rates of early preterm birth by 40%.
As part of my public hospital role, I am involved in teaching and guiding junior doctors and participate in various working groups to improve patient outcomes - The Breastfeeding Working Party to promote and improve rates of breastfeeding and The Tear Aware Working Party to prevent severe perineal trauma during birth.
My special interests include complex pregnancy care (including twins and vaginal birth after caesarean section VBAC), early pregnancy ultrasound and general gynaecology including contraception, menopause and vulval skin conditions.
Outside of work, I am supported by my incredible husband and family. My husband’s support has ensured that I am whole-heartedly able to provide care to my patients at any time of day or night. My biggest achievement is my little family and being a mother myself, I understand how important it is to feel respected and supported in the birth process and this is something I feel quite strongly about.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my page. I look forward to meeting you and working with you to ensure the best possible care individually tailored to your specific needs.
